Horse share for kids and families: what to watch out for
3 min read
A horse share is the natural next step after riding school for many kids. More time at the horse, own responsibility, familiarity with a concrete animal. This guide shows how Swiss families find the right constellation.
When a child is ready
No strict age limit, but three maturity stages emerge in Swiss practice.
- Up to 9 years. Horse share is essentially a family activity. The child is present, parents lead the horse, care and communicate with the owner.
- 10 to 14 years. Classic entry age. The child is regularly at the stable, grooms independently, saddles and rides. Parents remain in legal and insurance responsibility.
- From 14 to 15 years. Teens largely carry the share. Parents remain responsible for insurance, contracts and emergency communication.
Practical autonomy counts more than age.
Horse choice for a child
The choice is more delicate than for an adult. Several profiles fit:
- Older, balanced horses with riding school background. Know beginner mistakes and react calmly.
- Ponies or small horses. Size adapted to the child, lighter load.
- Mid-sized leisure horses with relaxed owner and calm character.
To avoid: young horses in training, active sport horses in competition, horses with behavioral particularities (fear, kicking, hard to lead), horses from a pure sport barn without culture for kids.
The right stable for a child
The stable is almost as important as the horse as a family venue.
- Indoor arena nearby for Swiss winter (November to March).
- Arena with supervision for the first weeks.
- Riding school on site to continue lessons on the known horse.
- Safety rules clear: helmet mandatory, clear access rules to boxes.
- Distance. For kids under 14, a parent drives. 15 to 25-minute trip is sustainable long-term.
- Friendly stable manager. The person the family will interact with a lot.
Communication in family and with the owner
Several communication points are crucial in a family horse share.
- Parent reachability. Owner should have two phone numbers plus a backup emergency person.
- WhatsApp group or stable chat. Common channel for days, cancellations, observations.
- Parallel riding lessons. Coordinate with owner and instructor.
- Care and stable work expectations. See Shared care checklist for detail.
- Behavior rules. Illness, holidays, other appointments.
Financial side
- Lower end of the range. Parents often pay at the bottom of CHF 80–300 because kids ride less often and less intensively.
- Who pays: The parents. Even if the child contributes from pocket money, payment runs through parents.
- Clear special costs. Lessons, equipment, camps. See guide on extra costs.
- Trial month. Four to six weeks without notice for getting to know.
Insurance and safety
More in the German Versicherungs and Reiten-fremder-Pferde guides. For the family constellation, briefly:
- Family private liability with "riding someone else's horse" add-on. Mandatory insurance before day one.
- Child's accident insurance. School insurance plus extra for sport.
- Helmet mandatory. Also on the outdoor arena, also in the indoor, also when leading a lively horse.
- Safe footwear. Riding boots or sturdy shoes with heel, never open shoes.
When the share doesn't hold
A well-started kids' share can end for the child's growth, school load or a stable change. Open communication with the owner and clean cancellation according to the notice period are the basis. Parents can play an important mediator role.
