Expenses & Cost Splitting

2 min read

The most invisible source of conflict in every riding partnership: who paid the last bill, who still owes what. With HorseCompanion the question disappears, because the system does the math along.

A new expense needs: amount, category, date, optional receipt photo. Eight standard categories cover horse life, stable rent, vet, farrier, feed, insurance, equipment, training and other.

Split per expense

For each expense you mark whether it's shared with the riding partner and set a percentage share. Example: stable rent gets split 50 %, a specialist vet bill not at all (0 %), a hay delivery proportionally. The system sums up cleanly what was shared and what was on you alone.

Receipts per expense

Take a photo of the receipt while logging, that's it. Receipt photos are stored per expense (JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 5 MB) and show up again in the detail view. When the insurance case comes or your accountant asks, you have the proof on hand.

Overview per period

The summary view shows:

  • Per horse: totals for the chosen period, split by category
  • Across all horses: aggregated view on your total horse spend
  • Shared vs private items: so you see at a glance what the riding partner effectively contributes

Clear roles

Expenses are owner-side: only the horse owner can create, edit or delete expenses. That reflects reality, riding partners contribute to costs, but financial responsibility lies with the owner. The riding partner sees the overview and their share, with no risk of arguments about "who's entering what".

Export for accounting and tax

CSV export for any period, with customisable columns and separators (comma, semicolon, tab), compatible with Excel, Numbers and all common accounting software. Annual clarity about the real cost of your horse is often the biggest insight in itself.
