GPS Ride Tracking
2 min read
You don't just ride, you experience something. How far did you go? How many metres of climb? Which route did you choose? GPS tracking turns every ride into a recording you can revisit later, years later, or just the next day.
One tap starts the recording
Before you mount: start ride tracking. HorseCompanion locks onto GPS, you get on, off you go. During the ride, position, speed, heading and elevation are continuously recorded. You see live:
- Current distance (km)
- Speed (km/h, average and current)
- Elevation (total up, total down)
- Duration (stopwatch, pauses separate)
- Map with your track so far
You can explicitly mark pauses, so pure standing time doesn't count as riding time.
After the ride: everything's there
When you end the recording, the full track is in the ride detail view, with distance, speed, elevation, duration and pause time. Optionally you link the ride to:
- a new activity, which appears automatically in calendar and activity log
- an existing activity (e.g. when you entered the appointment ahead of time)
- a training session in the training diary
You don't need to log anything manually, distance, speed, date and track are already there.
Statistics across all rides
Recorded rides feed into a dedicated ride statistic: total distance, elevation, average speed, number of rides, over up to 365 days back. You see at a glance how far you've actually been this year.
Notes and weather
At start you can capture weather data (temperature, conditions, useful for later trends, whether the horse moved differently in rain vs sun). At the end you add notes about the ride, editable later.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the GPS tracking?
Accuracy depends on the device and sky visibility, typically 3–8 metres, more in the woods or in a valley. Distance and elevation are very reliable for our purpose (activity tracking).
What happens to the ride after I stop?
Distance, speed, elevation, duration and the track are saved. Optionally, HorseCompanion creates a matching riding activity automatically, which shows up in the calendar and statistics, without you having to re-enter it.
Can I add notes or weather to the ride?
Yes. At start you can capture weather data, at the end you add notes. Notes are editable later, e.g. when you remember something the next day that you don't want to forget.
